Philip O’Hanlon, On A Higher Note, Midrange Magic

“I did not set out to build a company.  I set out to share music.

It started, as most things worth doing do … with a record.  I was young, in Cork, Ireland, and I had made a decision that still strikes people as eccentric: I chose not to own a car so that I could afford records instead.  I walked wherever I needed to go and I do not regret a single mile.  Each record I have ever purchased lives in my memory with the precision of a photograph, not just the music, but the moment: where I was, what I was feeling, who I was thinking about.

Music, for me, has always been the most honest record of a life being lived.

The soul of the music in the midrange.

That is where the human voice lives.

Where the cello speaks.

Where a trumpet can break your heart or lift it without warning.

Sharing music, the way artists intend, has been my passion in service of that register.

For twenty-five years, annual sequence of Roman numeral numbered “Philip’s Demo” compilation CD’s containing meticulously curated songs for the year filled exhibition halls as I gifted them to prospective clients, industry insiders and to my competitors when demonstrating.

For years, every week I gather two or three people: colleagues, music lovers, the occasional stranger who has just heard something for the first time and cannot quite explain why it affected them, and we sit together with a good Irish whisky or a red wine worth opening, and we listen.  No agenda. No demonstrations.  No selling.  Just the music, the room, and the people willing to be moved by both.

That gathering is the company in miniature.

Every brand we represent, every dealer we partner with, every demonstration we give is pointed at that room.  The equipment is the means.  The music is the end.  And the moment the listener stops hearing the system and starts feeling the performance is what On A Higher Note exists to deliver.

If that is the kind of business you want to be in, we should talk.”

OUR MISSION

The sole legitimate function of a music system, from modest to state of the art, is to enable the listener to enjoy the emotional experience of music performances. Our efforts are concentrated on distributing audio components which offer an exact recreation of live music performances without interfering with the musical enjoyment.

This pursuit demands dedication and a genuine love of music that is impossible to hire, which explains the fact that in those few companies that succeed in producing musically satisfying components, product development is inevitably dominated by individual personalities, rather than design by committee.

While we enjoy large-scale rock, we prefer to use acoustic performances on acoustic instruments as our musical reference. Similarly we recommend using music to voice a Home Theater system as we are familiar with how a Steinway grand piano should sound, while we have no such reference on hand to determine if a dinosaur stomp is accurate or not.

Our Founder, Philip O’Hanlon, has a long time track record in creating strategic relationships and market demands in specialty niche markets in the high technology field. Our success is mainly due to our ability to relate to and fulfill the needs of the manufacturers, the dealers, the end-users and channel partners, and our skills in creating brand awareness and excitement with both the reviewers and the consumers.

THE BENEFITS OF HIGH FIDELITY WHILE BREAKING BOUNDARIES

If you’re passionate about tone, timbre, pitch, and the blending of complex harmonic structures and instrumental textures that forms the whole; if you care about every nuance in the sounds produced by the instrumentalist or vocalist, along with natural (un-hyped) rhythmic drive; if you are passionate about the emotional response produced by music, then you will want an accurate presentation, you need to hear a well-balanced audio system.

We began our journey in 2001 with a vertical amplifier during the time when they were all horizontal boxes that fit in a rack and loudspeakers that had corners instead of curves.

OUR BRAND PORTFOLIO

On A Higher Note, LLC is a premier distributor of high-end audio components in the United States and Canada to distribute products from manufacturers of synergistic high-end audio components across the globe to high-end audio dealers.  We have a track record of rolling out distribution for quality brands and quickly establishing their unique presence with a premier dealer base and music lovers throughout the North America.

On A Higher Note does not represent products.

We represent a philosophy and then finds the products that embody it with sufficient integrity to carry it to a customer who has heard the alternative and found it wanting.  Our portfolio consists of curated brands, each chosen because it achieves what the industry speaks often of when select few truly delivers.

“The disappearance of the equipment … only the music is left in the air.”

luphonic logoLuphonic Turntables, Germany, Where materials science meets musical instinct.

Handcrafted turntables with a plinth of Corian and Neoprene and a carbon fiber tonearm — an unorthodox material combination that produces a sonically orthodox result: remarkable resolution and musicality at a price that invites entry rather than demands sacrifice.  Four models from $6,000 to $10,000.

LOGO1

OTTA, Over The Top Analog, Germany

Analog instruments for the pursuit of musical perfection.

To be launched in Vienna, June 2026, OTTA offers three moving-coil cartridges: the Mandolin ($2,500), Lute, and Theorbo, plus the Rapier and Sabre head shells and a forthcoming step-up transformer range.  The Mandolin has already received Product of the Year from LP International and an award from Fidelity (Germany) before the brand has formally opened its doors. Named after Renaissance instruments, each cartridge carries a singular purpose: to place the performers in a three-dimensional space before the listener, with the full weight of the venue behind them.  The gear disappears.  The music remains.

Artesania Audio logo

Artesania Audio, Spain

The foundation beneath everything else.

For decades, Artesania has made the case that their rack is not furniture.  It is a component. Known for their  proprietary double suspension structure with no shelves, Artesania designed their rack systems and accessories so that each electronic component is placed in suspension and independent of anything else on the rack.  Aside from cost savings, this improves performance of the most refined audio systems.

For the customer who has already invested significantly in components but with results that still disappoints, more often than not, the foundation is the part that’s been overlooked.  A system is only as honest as its weakest link, and Artesania ensures the foundation performs beyond expectations Artesania is famed for its proprietary anti-resonance acoustic technology.

About On a Higher Note’s track record

We successfully launched Halcro, an Australian brand of reference quality amplifiers, into the U.S. high-end electronics market from its infancy, and Vivid Audio, a South African loudspeaker company into the N. American high-end audio market from inception.  We were also responsible for establishing the N. American distribution network for Gryphon Audio Designs, a Denmark electronics manufacturer, EMM Labs, a manufacturer of CD/SACD playback systems, and returning Luxman, an audio legend of handcrafted Japanese electronics to N. America with a successful dealer network currently serving many self-proclaimed “Luxman addicts”.

OUR PHILOSOPHY IN WORKING WITH DEALERS

That room, where the record plays, the conversation quiets, and something true arrives, is what this partnership is built around.  The dealers who understand that are the ones we are looking for.

On A Higher Note works with a selective network of dealers who understand that the future of this business is cultural and not transactional.  They are dealers who have the taste, the community instinct, and the love of music to prove it.

On A Higher Note brings three things that cannot be sourced elsewhere.

First: A portfolio assembled with genuine curatorial intent.

Each brand was selected to serve a philosophy, not just to fill a category.  They work together.  A customer who begins with an OTTA Mandolin on a Luphonic turntable, feeding a Moonriver phono stage into Accustic Arts amplification, properly supported by Artesania below, has been introduced to a world with a natural, logical next step, and the step after that.  No dead ends.  No orphaned purchases.

Second: A point of view that is demonstrable in a single listening session.

Midrange Magic, the idea that the soul of music lives in the 200-4,000 Hz register, and that too many systems sacrifice that emotional core in pursuit of measurement-flattering resolution is not marketing language.  It is a truth that can be heard in under ten minutes by anyone who has ever been moved by music.  As Robert Ross observed in Robb Report, the goal is a system where the speakers disappear, where nothing is left but the music hanging in the air.  That is the promise this portfolio intends to uphold.

Third: A proven model of growth through inclusion.

The market’s next wave of high-value customers, women music lovers, design-conscious affluents, music-first buyers who have never been properly approached, represents the largest untapped opportunity in the premium segment.  On A Higher Note has been cultivating that audience for years and brings both the methodology and the materials to help dealers do the same.

OUR ALLIANCES WITH CHANNEL PARTNERS

“The perfect synergy makes the equipment disappear, and nothing is left but the music’s purity, clarity, and the emotions it evokes.  It needs to be experienced to be appreciated.”

On A Higher Note has very strong relationships and alliances with select manufacturers of synergistic products. We work with industry labels to support each other in large systems sales and demonstrations. We continue to cultivate strategic relationships that would further our goal to be the first stop for manufacturers of high-end audio components around the world as well as help in assembling stereo systems that are truly capable of performing at the edge of the art.

FINANCIAL HEALTH

On A Higher Note is well capitalized, debt free and financially sound. In all the years of operations, we have had zero bad debts.
