While Moonriver Audio’s modularity is part of its DNA, and Moonriver has been shipping the SPDIF DACs, the market has been shy of a USB DAC path from the manufacturer … until now.

Who this is for?

If you own a Moonriver Model 404 or 404R, and you have been waiting for a factory correct USB path, or, if you have been on the fence looking for a digital path from an analog leaning integrated amplifier,  this is your moment.

The Model 404 platform was designed to accept add on modules, including a USB DAC.  The news simply makes that promise tangible, and available now.

One important reality check, heat, and how Moonriver solved it

The 404 and 404R are high current, high musicality machines.  They can run warm with a USB DAC, especially when placed in closed cabinetry with limited airflow.

To address real world installations, Moonriver began shipping 404R units with a perforated back plate starting in May 2025.

Going forward, all Model 404 and 404R units will have no ongoing concern about heat management with a USB DAC module on board as the amplifier is installed with normal, sensible airflow.

What you receive depends on when your amplifier was built

Here is the simplest way to think about ordering.

If you are ordering a new 404 or 404R now: You will receive the amplifier already equipped with the correct ventilated measures, and you can order the USB DAC with it.

If you own a unit built after May 2025: You only need the USB DAC module, since your amplifier already has the ventilation/heat management built in.

If you own a unit built before May 2025: Your USB DAC order will include the USB DAC module and a perforated top plate upgrade that can be installed easily, so the amplifier is brought up to the current ventilation standard.

Why the USB module matters

For many listeners, USB is not about convenience, it is about access. It is the cleanest bridge from a curated library, or a streaming front end, into the Moonriver’s distinctly human presentation.
