Graham Audio, VOTU-MIRAMA, the new Mid Range Magic Model from their Voice of the Universe family

VOTU MIRAMA absorbed the advanced technology from the revised LS5/5 and LS5/5f.  These demonstrate Graham Audios latest endeavor to connect the listener to the music on an emotional, cerebral and visceral level.  VOTU MIRAMA offers a seamless and coherent loudspeaker system that optimally balances remarkable midrange clarity and resolution, with high and low frequency extension, and state of the art definition.

When designing a loudspeaker that has both high-power handling and an extended low frequency response the radiating area of both the bass driver and the reflex ports is crucial to giving a clean and powerful bass response, so an 18″ woofer together with horizontal front port was chosen as the best solution. This together with the 10 cubic feet cabinet gives the VOTU MIRAMA a strong and extended bass response, a solid foundation on which to build the rest of the design.

The cabinet is internally braced to ensure that any panel resonances are above the bass to mid crossover point.

The lower cabinet contains two 10″ drivers in a sealed compartment tuned to complement the response of the sub-woofer, with both panel and standing wave damping of the style used in the rest of our loudspeaker range

The upper cabinet has a 7″ driver, and a high-power ribbon tweeter.  This cabinet is fitted onto the bass cabinet with rubber feet in recesses to give accurate positioning of the cabinet, together with reducing acoustic coupling between the two cabinets.

The crossover network is mounted in the lower cabinet and the upper and lower cabinets are connected by a link cable with professional grade Speakon connectors. The crossovers use high quality components to complement the drive units.

As with all Graham Audio’s designs, air core inductors are used to ensure that the sound does not suffer at all from the compression and distortion effects associated by any cored inductor.  The improved sonic quality of such components more than compensates for the increased cost associated with them. High quality Polypropylene capacitors match the performance of the other components of the system.

The loudspeaker has 2 pairs of high-grade binding posts, one pair feeding the 18″ subwoofer and the other feeding the rest of the system.

This enables the user to choose between using a single driving amplifier for the entire system, or to ‘bi-amp’, using individual amplifiers for the lower and upper cabinets.

The veneered version of the cabinets are arranged so the veneer grain flows between the upper and lower cabinets, giving a visual unity to the design.

The cabinets are constructed using the ‘thin wall damped’ approach used throughout our range, resulting in low coloration, and complementing the high quality of all the other components. This ensures that any cabinet resonances are considerably reduced, and the ‘Q’, effectively the length of time the resonances persist for, is minimized so as not to impact sound quality.

In any cabinet there are internal standing waves which can be radiated both through the cabinet walls and back through the driver cones. Graham Audio uses Rockwool to damp out these resonances, and the thickness and positioning is chosen for maximum effect.

The combination of panel damping and standing wave control has proven over the years to involve the listener with a coherent and resolute sounding, musically mesmerizing, and emotionally engaging performance from the loudspeaker system.
