The LS5/1 Floor stander, 2-way Monitor has a 15″ woofer and two 1″ tweeters and is preceded by the classic LS5/1. Using modern commercially available drive units from Plessey and GEC and the latest techniques, Graham Audio’s LS5/1 is greatly improved for both power handling and bandwidth over the Plessey original.
Slot-loading used for the LS5/5 is also used for this LS5/1 model to attenuate “beaming” at the upper ranges of its operations and to improve the off-axis response, making it possible to use larger woofers in typical residential listening rooms. To complement the necessary power handling, not only are two tweeters required, but in this case, the upper tweeter is designed to roll away at higher frequencies to avoid the acoustic lobing effects associated with two sources producing the same output when the spacing between them is comparable to the wavelength.
The floor-standing cabinet uses the traditional BBC approach of thin panels. They are mass-loaded to move the resonances down away from the critical midrange region. High-quality hand-selected veneers are applied, and the grille is held in place with concealed magnets so can be readily removed if desired.

Q: Why are there slots in front of the drivers for the LS5/5?
A: All drivers are non linear in their output. As frequency rises, the output diminishes. When one goes up in volume, the drivers project sound to a more focused point in one direction. The slotted baffle smooths out the integration between all drivers, forcing the drivers to have a more linear output across the frequency response and the sound to disperse more evenly. It makes the presentation more natural, achieving a much wider sweet spot, and a smoother response.
From a practical standpoint, it makes the speakers easier to place in the room. This practice was discontinued for marketing reasons and not for sound quality.
